For their exhibition in Cleve Carney Art Gallery Luftwerk will be creating a sixty-foot long mural that merges the fundamental languages of morse code with that of color theory. Using the dots and dashes of the universal call for distress, S.O.S. , this work will stretch across the entire West wall of the gallery.

White Wanderer takes inspiration from the Larsen C ice shelf in Antarctica, which broke off into the Weddell Sea in July 2017 – forever altering the landscape of the continent. Using real life recordings of the sounds and frequencies of calving ice bergs, along with satellite imagery of the 120-mile Larsen C crack, Luftwerk brings this remote place to life to deepen public understanding of the connection between climate change and sea level rise. The project is the culmination of a yearlong collaboration with NRDC, with additional help from the University of Chicago.

Luftwerk is pleased to be included in The Midnight Special at Volume Gallery, 1709 W Chicago Ave, Chicago IL, 60622.

Featuring works by Bec Brittain, Benas Burdulis, Bureau Spectacular, Aaron Jones, Thomas Leinberger, Luftwerk, Jonathan Muecke, and Anders Ruhwald, The Midnight Special is an exploration of the different forms and characteristics of light. These works open a dialogue between the physicality of objects and the immaterial properties of the light which they manipulate or project, examining how the corporeal can influence the ethereal.

Thoreau’s Cloudland in Morse Code atop the Steeples
MASS MoCA’s Clocktower — in concert with four church steeples that define North Adams’ skyline — will be joined in a dramatically synchronized work of light art. Beginning May 26, and running all summer from dusk to midnight, the steeples and Clocktower will broadcast — using Morse Code beacons activated in unison — the Henry David Thoreau poem Cloudland, which the poet wrote after hiking up and spending the night at the mountain summit, the highest peak in Massachusetts. Upon waking to find himself caught above a solid deck of clouds hiding the valleys below, Thoreau wrote:

As the light increased 
I discovered around me an ocean of mist,
which by chance reached up to exactly the base of the tower,
and shut out every vestige of the earth,
while I was left floating on this fragment
of the wreck of the world,
on my carved plank in cloudland;
a situation which required,
no aid from the imagination
to render it impressive.

The light installation will be on view every night from May 27 through September 5, from approximately dusk to midnight.

On Saturday, APRIL 1st, 2017, from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm, the Farnsworth House, the iconic glass and steel structure designed by Mies van der Rohe and an historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will team up with Matthew Rachman Gallery for the second annual benefit, ”For the Love of Farnsworth 2017.”

There will be an introduction by Dirk Lohan, award-winning architect, designer and grandson of Mies van der Rohe, as well as a discussion lead by guests of honor, Luftwerk.

In addition, Matthew Rachman Gallery will feature an exhibition of Farnsworthian artwork from Luftwerk, Kate Joyce, Tom Judd, and more. 10% of all art sales will directly benefit Farnsworth House.

Excited to illuminate Turning Sky last weekend! Turning Sky is an ephemeral lighting station visualizing atmospheric conditions on The 606. Patterns of clouds varying in speed coincide with wind data, velocity, and direction, and the ever-changing colors represent temperature. This next phase of the art installation launches in early February when Turning Sky’s dynamic visualization of environmental conditions will be driven by real-time data from The Array of Things urban sensing project, transforming the bridge into an abstract lighting and weather station.
